How to connect to your VPN

Your VPN uses WireGuard, a free app made by the WireGuard project. Setup takes about two minutes. Pick your device below.

Before you start

  1. Install WireGuard on the device you want to protect. It is free. Official downloads for every system are on wireguard.com/install.
  2. Log in to your account at portal.personalvm.com. Under your VPN you will see three devices: device-1, device-2, device-3.
  3. Use one device slot per phone or computer. Do not use the same slot on two devices at once.

Keep your QR codes and files private. Each one contains the key to your VPN. Do not post them or send them to anyone.

Download WireGuard

iPhone / iPad

  1. Install WireGuard from the App Store.
  2. On a computer, open your portal and tap Show QR next to a free device (for example device-1).
  3. On your iPhone, open WireGuard, tap +, then Create from QR code, and point the camera at the QR code on the computer screen.
  4. Give the tunnel a name (for example personalvm), then tap Allow when iOS asks to add a VPN configuration.
  5. Switch the tunnel on. A VPN icon appears at the top of the screen.

Android

  1. Install WireGuard from Google Play.
  2. On a computer, open your portal and click Show QR next to a free device.
  3. On your phone, open WireGuard, tap +, then Scan from QR code, and scan the code on the computer screen.
  4. Name the tunnel, then tap Create tunnel. Allow the VPN connection request if Android asks.
  5. Switch the tunnel on. A key icon appears in the status bar.

Windows

  1. Download and install WireGuard from wireguard.com/install.
  2. In your portal, click Download next to a free device. A .conf file is saved to your computer.
  3. Open WireGuard and click Add Tunnel (bottom left), then choose the .conf file you downloaded.
  4. Click Activate. The status changes to Active.

Mac

  1. Install WireGuard from the Mac App Store.
  2. In your portal, click Download next to a free device.
  3. Open WireGuard from the menu bar, choose Import tunnel(s) from file…, and select the downloaded .conf file. Allow the VPN configuration when macOS asks.
  4. Click Activate.

Linux

  1. Install WireGuard tools, for example on Debian or Ubuntu: sudo apt install wireguard.
  2. In your portal, click Download next to a free device.
  3. Copy the file into place and lock it down (replace the file name with yours):
    sudo cp ~/Downloads/device-1.conf /etc/wireguard/personalvm.conf
    sudo chmod 600 /etc/wireguard/personalvm.conf
  4. Turn the VPN on and off:
    sudo wg-quick up personalvm
    sudo wg-quick down personalvm
  5. Optional, to start it automatically at boot: sudo systemctl enable --now wg-quick@personalvm

Check that it works

  1. With the VPN switched on, open a browser and search for what is my IP.
  2. The address shown should be the IP address listed under your VPN in the portal.
  3. Switch the VPN off and search again. You should see your normal address, which confirms the VPN is doing its job.

Troubleshooting

The VPN says connected, but no pages load.
Switch the tunnel off and on again. Make sure this device slot is not in use on another phone or computer at the same time.
The IP address did not change.
Check that the tunnel really is switched on, then reload the “what is my IP” page.
My VPN says “pending” in the portal.
Your server is still being prepared. This usually takes a couple of minutes. When it shows ready, the QR codes and downloads appear.
I need more than three devices.
